shine your light.

shine your light.
bright.

present. standing in the light of your truth. carrying hope in your pocket. knowing your goodness.

believe in the goodness of the light you carry, honoring the world. honoring your bright self.

light a candle and be present to this moment. this truth. what stories does your heart tell? how does hope speak from your pocket?

lighting candles and sitting near is a sacred task. keep watch. the waiting space is holy. invite the sacred into your midst. fill up. feel up.

soak your toes in the miraculous sunlight.

and be.

in a moment of quiet.

even in these moments of quiet words are swimming in my mind.

updates for ical.  to-do's needing to add to the get it done list.  ((oh, i do love lists.))
bright ideas.  ((they never stop. thank you, creative spirit!))  a weekly menu to construct and create.  ((and i'll be out almost every night this week.))  a festival to help plan for april. ((go team!))  500 feet of celebration banner to complete before easter.  ((love, love, love.))  so much more.

so. much.

it's exciting!  it's what i want and need.  i need work.  i need to create.  i need the space to grow and thrive.

and yet...

in this moment of quiet i center my focus on one task.  one task and then possibly another.  some times my endless list can feel overwhelming.  my breath quickens.  ((you know exactly what i'm talking about.))  one step.  one focused task encountered and completed.  ((how good that feels!))

making time for...

yoga.  centering.  breathing.  sitting.  listening.

whole again.

sending light and love.
xo.

mindful mornings. today's pace.

one of my favorite spots in the kitchen is my kitchen window.  i've crafted it to be an altar in the world.  an altar in my world.  it's filled with bits and pieces from my days.  broken robin egg shells from walks in my neighborhood, an opened seed pod from the back garden, found bird feathers, an intention/prayer candle, a mindfulness jar, green plants, and wisdom's reminders.

there's nothing particularly special about this space and everything special about it all at once.  it's crafted as bits and pieces are added.  from time to time it's cleaned. i remove everything and return it to its place.

there's a rhythm to that process of removing everything and returning it to its place that's taken shape in the rhythms of my day.  as my mornings shift from being a one-car family for a couple of weeks to a two-car family again, what has been removed from daily routines is now being returned.  i love that gentle nudge that comes when you've held onto an object, a thought, a routine that once it's out of sight & mind for a bit, you can let it go.  that nudge welcomes the release and you know you made a good choice to clean house.  then you sweep it away without regret.

of course the imagery of removing everything and returning it to its place spills into our daily routines and rituals, into our relationships, and into our habits.

this time of the year seems to me the most busy for the boards i serve.  orientations, trainings, art auctions, fundraisers.  oh, my.  it's enough to keep your head spinning.  i wonder: are we creating those nurturing spaces for growth as we keep our selves busy, busy?  my productive time in this season is spent nurturing individual relationships, stitching and piecing stories and quilts, clicking two needles together to knit, listening to the sound of my shoes as i crunch along on morning frost.  i retreat inward at the same time, listening to the practices and rhythms that i have developed to see what needs release before moving into the spring.

honoring this time.  offering myself the time and space to create.  living each day while looking forward to what beautiful days await.  leaning into the sadness of illness, death, and loss.  oh, what a mixture.  life.

today is a day to create.  i am creating a new rhythm for this day, picking up around this cozy home, and eventually getting into the studio to make things and set the table for tomororw's creative clergy.

what do you create today in your experience of living?

colors of my day. 2.5.2012

feeling a little spunky tonight.  saying hello from the kitchen.

a happy, spunky hello!

lighting a candle for evening prayers.

sending love and light.

shaking the mindfulness jar.  thankful for spenge for so many reasons. thank you, spenge, for showing me your jar in your kitchen window.  jo's beautiful green has glitter to match!  spenge linked to chasing the firefly for instructions.  my sweet boy had made a color experiment using watercolors+water ((i think)) and we added glitter + a little mrs. meyers dish soap per spenge's suggestion.  the mindfulness jar works quite well with its sparkly goodness.  we'll have these as make-and-take party favors for jo's 6th birthday this year.

speaking wisdom.  truly. this practice is so i can listen to wisdom.  so many times last year i became aware of those moments of knowing wisdom had spoken and i didn't listen.  i was close and knew i should listen, but i moved quickly past her voice.  i decided to listen.  to really listen.  and here we are.

mindful moments: an exercise in listening to wisdom.

introducing a new practice of bringing my art+spirit work onto the blog.  mindful moments will invite you to a space of connecting with the sacred through a creative act or practice.  i invite you to connect with me, letting me know how you experience this practice.  these are a gift for each of us.

Grab a piece of paper & something to write with. Make it something large enough for you to write on. Can be anything. Paper from the recycling and a crayon works. Post it note & pen.

Still yourself from within by drawing in three deep breaths. Five if you need them. ((Count to 5 breathing in.  Count to 5 breathing out. Quiet yourself in each breath.))

Close your eyes and ask yourself what you most need to hear in this moment.  Allow your inner wisdom to speak. If you don't hear anything, do not become anxious.  Just breathe.

Now, breathe in those words, feelings, or thoughts. Take a moment to write, draw, name what wisdom your soul is speaking to you in this moment.

Place that scrap of wisdom in a space you'll see it. Tape it to your mirror or put it in the windowsill or on the fridge. Repeat this practice as needed.
... Be Gentle. Love. Be Loved. ...

Just be.  xo.

life stories: mindful change ((revisited)) & mindful presence

enjoying a day off from school, jo and i ventured into the world in the rain. he loves walking in the rain, opening his mouth to it, catching it in his palm.  that water is important to the world.  i think of acid rain and what pollutants we might put into the rain, but he sees provision for the plants and grass.  i see both.  oh, let us care for the earth.

we dine together using our mugs from home, enjoying ice cream and a toasted bagel with cream cheese. the sacredness of the silence in our time sitting at table is marked.  the delight in the colors and textures before me is noted.  i love sharing tmie and energy with this sweet child of mine.  i continue to marvel at what five years of living has taught him.  he's curious, thoughtful, silly, and fun.

motherhood continues to teach me.  i'll always be both teacher and student on this journey.  for that i am thankful.  we move into days of play and rest.  we move into a space of wide open possibility and lessons with goals and objectives.

right now i want to continue to move into spaces of success and delight in motherhood and ministry and art.  my presence to this dear boy, my love, and to those whom i minister is meant to filled with goodness and creativity.  each of these areas deserve full attention and presence.
each moment that i spend still, quiet, focused, mindful i find myself using fewer words. i find my comprehension & thoughts focusing and i am in love with the ability to speak well. i am in love with the ability to be centered and positive.
at times i become distracted by the spaces & thoughts surrounding me.  i know that happens.  sometimes i become focused on how much more i could be doing.  letting that thought go, i can be fully present to what i am doing and who i am in that moment.  i can listen to the sacred stories of others and be filled with the presence of the sacred in that moment.
i do feel full of good things. i want to express those good thoughts & share my life story. if negative thoughts or emotions come, i don't ignore them, but send them on their way. there's no room, no space left for them.
my pursuit is to be fully integrated: mother, minister, friend, artist, daughter... to be fully present through all the spaces of life: cooking, gardening, sewing, reading, writing, dreaming, sitting, practicing yoga, walking, hiking, stepping forward...

as i reflect during this lenten season, i have beecome aware of how my mind has been stuck in the past. when gathering with others, sometimes i find myself reacting to their old self and not the new self that has emerged.  where once complaint and negativity filled the conversations more than much else, i recognize that shift into new paths, new spaces of reflection and positive energy.  yet, my mind is caught flavoring those thoughts with memories of the past.  here before me is a new mindfulness.  i must have a mindful presence to receive what is in the here and now and release the old thoughts.  to release the "but you said this" and didn't you mean what you said?

we all change and grow.  what i say today holds meaning today.  if i am living well, fully integrated, my words will shift as a part of change and growth.  now is the time to remain as flexible in receiving the growth of others.  to welcome the new, renewed energies.  to make room for their presence where i once distanced myself from those spaces.  there's a mindful presence to this sort of space and pace.

and so in this moment, this day, i am moving into my wholeness as i name what once was and release it into the wind.  i name the truth of what i am experiencing and give myself the freedom and space to move forward, to change and to grow. a creative process in becomind mindful in this time and space, fully present to myself and others.  fully able to delight in the moments with my dear boy, finding peace when we sit together, hearing his laughter as it happens with a mind that's free and present.

life stories: mindful change ((reposted))

life stories: mindful change was originally published on 28 October 2009.

i'm beginning to think that if we each spent 10 minutes (or more) a day in still, mindful meditation we'll change the world. that change will begin within each of us, and the possibilities are limitless... i'm not the first to think such thoughts, but i join in the belief system that exists.

as i remove myself from social media, as i quiet our home with no sounds other than those natural "home" sounds and the sounds from outside, as i breathe deeply & sit still, there's something that takes shape from within. there's an inner stillness & awareness that wakes up within me and speaks to the world, the universe around me. there's a loss of time and space and an new creation of presence.

each moment that i spend still, quiet, focused, mindful i find myself using fewer words. i find my comprehension & thoughts focusing and i am in love with the ability to speak well. i am in love with the ability to be centered and positive.

what has surprised me are those moments of recognition where sarcasm, once practiced, is not so present. i even read & hear sarcasm in others as complaint rather than humor. [friends, i'll still love you, but i may distance myself from some of those tweets or comments on facebook.] you likely won't know. i'll just bid you blessings and peace.

when another friend called this week and spoke of my status updates & desire to be at a table with me, to sit and be in a thoughtful, well-intentioned conversation, i was humbled. during our conversation, memories of what i read that day that weren't so thoughful or well-intentioned (says the inner critic) poured into my mind. my conversation with this beloved friend wasn't as focused or centered. my mouth opened with questions and concerns. i said OUT LOUD some of my gut's instincts over recent days. i'm not sure if it "felt" good to be unburdened and share these thoughts with this kindred spirit or not. there's no guilt or regret, just questions of why so much welled up within. what i do hope is that we have the same desires each time we speak to want to be with the other person at table, sharing a meal or coffee together. to know that when we are low, there are folks who can help us to retain our balance. to know that we can first sit in a quiet stillness, listening to the sounds of our breathing, acknowledging our own thoughts that come into play as we sit and breathe.

we have so much potential inside of us. we are full of infinite possibility. (says one of my mini mixed media) while i am not attempting to share fortune cookie-like comments, i do feel full of good things. i want to express those good thoughts & share my life story. if negative thoughts or emotions come, i don't ignore them, but send them on their way. there's no room, no space left for them.

as my loving husband told me last night, "your mind is on other things." and he's right on target: my mind is on other things. mindful, thoughtful, peaceful, loving things. still in recognition of illness, death, and sorrow. much of that is spoken of in conversations with family & friends & those in the bereavement support group. i am in tune with that reality as well. awareness is so much of what brings that mindfulness through the creative spirit. then i can create & pray. i can be mindful that life is good, even when it's not.
